About This Track
'Scissors' runs nearly eight and a half minutes, a sprawling descent into dissociation and self-harm. Slipknot adopts a deranged perspective throughout, the narrator detached from his own body, unable to feel despite possessing nerves. The song moves between clinical imagery and emotional collapse, the title itself referencing the opening act of self-mutilation: "I play doctor for five minutes flat / Before I cut my heart open and let the air out." The track builds through repetition and accumulation. A hypnotic loop of "biding my time until the time is right" stretches across the middle section, voices layering and fragmenting around it. By the final third, the song splinters further, competing internal voices clawing at one another, the narrator caught between wanting connection and wanting oblivion. It is a song about numbness, about the impossibility of feeling anything at all, and about the terrible clarity that can arrive when that numbness finally breaks.
"Scissors" is a track by Slipknot, from the album Slipknot, released 1989. The track is 8:25 long. It's filed under Metal. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 9 articles about Slipknot.
