'Kitchen' interpolates the Isley Brothers' 'Voyage to Atlantis', its chorus drifting with a lightness that feels almost weightless against the gravity of the subject. SZA adopts the voice of someone caught in a cycle of reconciliation and relapse, the title's domestic scene standing in for the larger pattern of forgiveness she knows she shouldn't grant. The hook flutters along like pollen on the wind, a deceptive ease masking the difficulty she names outright: 'So hard to do the right thing.' The lyrics trace the pull of physical intimacy against better judgement, SZA acknowledging both the history and the harm without resolving the tension between them. She writes herself into rock bottom as a destination she keeps returning to, the repetition of 'back again' doing the structural work of showing a loop she can describe but not yet break. The song's freeform drift suits her voice, which sounds entirely sure of its ability to convey ambivalence without needing to tidy it into a lesson.
