About This Track
Tems and J. Cole navigate the wreckage of a relationship that has become more burden than joy. Tems opens with the admission of a fall into something she cannot control, whilst Cole arrives to catalogue the specific betrayals: the shifting of goalposts, the refusal to meet him halfway, the slow drowning of what once felt manageable. Neither artist indulges in anger so much as exhaustion. The song moves through their competing perspectives on a love that has curdled, each voice arriving at the same conclusion from a different angle. The track finds its weight in restraint. Tems repeats the refrain "I had to run, I had enough" with the clarity of someone who has already made her decision, whilst Cole's verse unfolds as a kind of reckoning, tracing the arc from devotion to confusion to the simple fact of incompatibility. What emerges is a portrait of two people who tried and failed, and who have chosen to acknowledge that failure rather than perform recovery.
"Free Fall" is a track by Tems, from the album Born in the Wild, released 7th June 2024. It's filed under R&B/Soul. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 9 articles about Tems.
