About This Track

'The Exploding Boy' by The Cure is on the album 'Join The Dots: The B-Sides & Rarities' and was released in 1985. The lyrics sketch an overwhelmed narrator trying to block out relentless speech, with a sense of refusal and withdrawal set against a relationship sliding into irritation and distance. A short, brittle turn of phrase frames the moment the speaker decides, in effect, to look away rather than keep listening, summarised by the line “I couldn't hear at all”.
