About This Track
A collaboration from The Weeknd's third album 'Starboy', released in 2016, with Kendrick Lamar contributing a verse. The track was written by both artists alongside Doc McKinney, Daniel Wilson, Robert John Richardson, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, who also handled production.
The sidewalks of the title function as a metaphor for the path from obscurity to success. The Weeknd opens with a verse that traces the arc from homelessness to the Forbes list, invoking Moses and the idea of being chosen, whilst Kendrick's contribution sketches a world of late-night violence, sudden wealth, and the complications that follow. Both artists frame the street as formative, a teacher that never lies but leads them on.
The chorus returns to the central image: sidewalks as salvation and guide, a constant presence that shows all the signs. Daniel Wilson provides the post-chorus vocal, reinforcing the idea of being led forward by the very ground that once defined their limits.
"Sidewalks" is a track by The Weeknd, released 25th November 2016. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 20 articles about The Weeknd.
