The glossy pivot point of The Weeknd's career, 'Starboy' paired him with Daft Punk in 2016 and recast his after-dark menace as sleek, chart-ready electro-pop. As the title track and lead single of his third album, it traded some of the murk of his earlier work for a harder, brighter sheen, a knowing portrait of fame's excess delivered with a wink.
There was a neat piece of history in it too. The song gave The Weeknd his third US number one, but more strikingly it handed Daft Punk their first and, as it turned out, only Hot 100 chart-topper, the French duo having stalled at number two with 'Get Lucky' a few years earlier. For one of electronic music's most influential acts, it proved an unlikely commercial peak.
