About This Track
'Broken' contemplates the cyclical damage of millennial romance over soft acoustic guitar. Jessie Reyez and Drew Love trade verses about the patterns that trap them: falling in love, questioning each other's motives, breaking apart, and starting again. The song's architecture mirrors its theme. Reyez sings from the perspective of someone who sabotages connection by projecting her own fractures onto her partner; Love responds with the mirror image, a man giving everything only to be blamed for wounds he did not inflict. Both adopt the same refrain, a confession wrapped in denial: "I lie and say I didn't come broken." The genius of the track is its refusal to assign fault. Neither voice is wrong. Both are trapped in a loop where past hurt becomes present ammunition, where the need to be saved becomes the need to assign blame. The song was originally conceived as a Reyez solo piece during an impromptu studio session, but Love's addition transforms it from confession into dialogue, from individual damage into the mutual wreckage two broken people can create together.
