About This Track
Released in January 1998 from Usher's second album 'My Way', 'Nice & Slow' marked a commercial breakthrough for the singer, becoming his first number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart the following month. Co-written by Usher alongside Brian and Brandon Casey of Jagged Edge, Jermaine Dupri, and Manuel Seal Jr., the track established the template for the unhurried R&B seduction that would define much of late-Nineties slow-jam radio.
The production favours space over density, letting Usher's vocal runs and ad-libs breathe across a minimal groove. Lyrically, the song maps a familiar journey from anticipation to arrival, the narrator cruising across town in his drop-top whilst the object of his attention waits. Usher spells out his own name in the bridge, a playful assertion of ownership that doubles as a kind of signature.
The song's success lay in its restraint. Where contemporaries might have leaned harder on tempo shifts or layered harmonies, 'Nice & Slow' holds its pace, trusting the central hook and Usher's delivery to carry the weight.
"Nice & Slow" is a single by Usher, from the album My Way, released 15th September 1997. The track is 3:48 long. It's filed under R&B/Soul. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 3 articles about Usher.
