About This Track

‘Solitaire’ by Wilco is a 2009 track from ‘Wilco (The Album)’. The lyrics move from youthful certainty to disillusion, casting happiness as something pursued while the narrator stands apart, then shifting to a colder, more mechanistic self-assessment, with an admission that realisation arrived too late, captured in the truncated line “Took too long to see / I”. The song’s perspective is inward and regretful, tracking how grand theories about the world and the self fail to hold up.

"Solitaire" is a track by Wilco, from the album Wilco (The Album), released 30th June 2009. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 3 articles about Wilco.

Lyrics

Solitaire

[Verse 1]

Once I thought the world was crazy

Everyone was sad and chasing

Happiness and love and

I was the only one above it

[Verse 2]

Once I thought without a doubt

I had it all figured out

Universe with hands unseen

I was cold as gasoline

[Chorus]

Took too long to see

I was wrong to believe in me only

[Verse 3]

Once my life was a game so unfair

It beat me down and kept me there

Unaware of my naysayin'

Solitaire was all I was playing

[Chorus]

Took too long to see

I was wrong to believe in me only
