Cherry Glazerr - Apocalipstick

It makes you want to dance, and wear glitter as your warpaint while fucking shit up.

Label: Secretly Canadian
Released: 27th January 2017
Rating: â˜…★★★

At just 19, Clementine Creevy has already got two albums under her belt with her brainchild Cherry Glazerr. The third instalment ‘Apocalipstick’, proves even further that she’s got more flare than anyone else. It might be obvious to mention Clem’s young age, but it’s astounding taking this account when listening to her band’s third record as a newly formed trio. Cherry Glazerr is blazing, but it’s not shouting about it.

Clem Creevy is the Karen O that Generation Z needs – she’s an honest innovator who’s damn good at her craft. ‘Apocalipstick’ has transformed the slacker vibes of earlier material into intricate melodies, trancey synths, and bucket loads of fuzz. This isn’t just a punk record, it’s as if Cherry Glazerr’s minds, filled with everything they’ve heard throughout their lives, has exploded. These are the remains.

‘Apocalipstick’ is an important record – it has a vulnerability which pulls forward the idea that this band have the potential to be powerful. Even the disco channelling, hilarious ‘Trash People’ notes that it’s important to see your flaws and take the piss out of them; ‘I wear my underpants three days in a row’ Clem sings.

The musical intelligence on ‘Apocalipstick’ is astounding: ‘Sip O Poison’, a track released a year ago for Adult Swim Singles, has been reworked ever so slightly for the record. It’ss a noise rock whirlwind; excruciatingly heavy, driven with a bassline bubbling under the surface waiting to explode, and – though the synths shouldn’t work – they make the whole thing nothing short of remarkable. The genius doesn’t stop there. Clem talks about social media narcissism on ‘Instagratification’. ‘Apocalipstick’ is ballsy, and beautiful. It makes you want to dance, and wear glitter as your warpaint while fucking shit up. Jasleen Dhindsa
