Chromeo exist on a completely different field to everyone else. One submerged in autotuned grooves and unashamed club favourites that don’t so much hook you in, but pull you right through the front door and onto the dancefloor. It’s a formula that has held them solid across four studio albums, and their fifth – ‘Head Over Heels’ – continues that form with an unfaltering commitment to going as big and unabashed as possible.
It’s an album so neon that you should probably go down to Sunset Boulevard just to check Chromeo haven’t taken the famous lights, and it’s a core that shines and bursts throughout. ‘Don’t Sleep’ is a shuffling number that moves across soulful hits and punchy toe-tapping ease, ‘Just Friends’ is a glorious duet with rising R&B favourite Amber Mark that plays across each other as a standout highlight of the record – while the one-two of ‘Bedroom Calling Pt 1’ and ‘Bedroom Calling Pt 2’ is a shapeshifting beast that jumps from crooning stadium-pop to unravelling ‘Get Lucky’-esque soul-disco heights. Think Jesus Of Suburbia but without the red ties and political force.
Chromeo know what they do well, and they have no bones about amping it up to the brightest it can be. In its shimmering and infectious disco lights, ‘Head Over Heels’ is an album that’ll have fans jumping up and down and screaming along in equal measure – and a trip that pushes the world to one side in order to dance late into the night.
