FINNEAS – For Cryin’ Out Loud!

4/5
Artists: Finneas

Label: Interscope Records
Released: 4th October 2024

Ten Grammys in five years might be enough for most, but not for FINNEAS. On his latest album, ‘For Cryin’ Out Loud’, the prolific producer and songwriter takes a lighter, more positive approach compared to 2021’s ‘Optimist’, where piano ballads and self-questioning outbursts dominated. This time around, FINNEAS seems comfortable in his own skin, expressing a newfound ease and confidence across the record that adopts its predecessor’s title more literally.

Thematically, the he offers a laid-back journey through the varying contradictions of romance, with understated vocals making the storytelling feel effortless. Tracks like ‘What’s It Gonna Take To Break Your Heart’ build seamlessly from mellow inflections to snowballing drama, offering the kind of gradual burn that’s tailor-made for live shows. Meanwhile, ‘Sweet Cherries’ highlights FINNEAS’ flair for dynamic range, starting as an infatuated slow jam before unexpectedly dropping into raw piano and working to slowly rebuild itself

The title-track, ‘For Cryin’ Out Loud’, captures the dichotomy of love’s joys and frustrations, setting the tone for the recurring theme of emotional push and pull. It’s a love letter to his girlfriend Claudia Sulewski, touching on the ups and downs of their relationship while ultimately affirming their deep connection (“I’m singing your praises”). These moments of vulnerability are balanced with a sense of purpose and grounded by a self-awareness that threads through the LP.

Over ten tracks, the album feels both eclectic and cohesive. Midpoint cut ‘Same Old Story’ shifts the mood from deflated acceptance to inextinguishable flickers of hope, while the closing track ‘Lotus Eater’ embraces uncertainty, still searching for answers but making peace with the lack of true resolution.

‘For Cryin’ Out Loud’ doesn’t always chase the immediacy or high-energy hits of FINNEAS’ past. Instead, it finds strength in subtlety and quiet courage, showcasing his knack for infectious choruses and complex arrangements that flex undeniable instrumental mastery. With its mix of smooth melodies and intricate production, it strikes a balance between introspective and fun — a fulfilling listen from start to finish.
