Porridge Radio – Clouds In The Sky They Will Always Be There For Me

4/5

Label: Secretly Canadian
Released: 18th October 2024

Working through burnout would be enough for many to take a step back, but throw in the breakdown of an intense relationship and you’ve got what sounds like a definite valid excuse to hit the brakes. Not for Porridge Radio’s Dana Margolin, though.

Everyone’s got their own way of processing and Margolin’s is clearly to write about whatever is happening in her life. Most of the songs on ‘Clouds In The Sky They Will Always Be There For Me’ started off as poems that, with the addition of the musical arrangement, really allow listeners to feel the intensity of the situation laid out in the lyrics.

Emotions run high on the majority of the album, ‘God of Everything Else’ is a cathartic disclosure of the end of an unhealthy relationship, with it building up until it ends with the singer declaring with a wail that she would do anything to get away from her former partner.

Taking your life back as your own following the end of a relationship is one of the most important steps a person can take. ‘Sick Of The Blues’ is the perfect closer for an album largely about heartbreak for this very reason. It’s a nod to everything you’ve been through but also an acknowledgement that it’s okay to move on and enjoy your life again.
