Dinosaur Jr. is an American rock band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1984. The band was founded by J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph. After releasing three albums on independent labels, the band gained recognition as an influence on American alternative rock. Creative differences led to Barlow's departure, and he was replaced by Mike Johnson for three major-label albums. Murph eventually left the band, with Mascis taking over on drums before the group disbanded in 1997. The original lineup reunited in 2005 and released five albums thereafter. Mascis's vocals and guitar style, characterized by feedback and distortion, drew from 1960s and 1970s rock influences.
