Steven Paul Smith, known as Elliott Smith, was an American musician and singer-songwriter born on August 6, 1969, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was raised primarily in Texas and lived much of his life in Portland, Oregon. Smith's primary instrument was the guitar, but he also played piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. His vocal style was characterized by a whispery, thin delivery, and he frequently used multi-tracking to create layered vocals, textures, and harmonies, often fingerpicked and recorded with tape. After performing with the rock band Heatmiser for several years, Smith launched a solo career in 1994, releasing music on independent labels Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars. In 1997, he signed with DreamWorks Records, recording his final two albums with the label. His song 'Miss Misery', recorded for the film Good Will Hunting, was nominated for the 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Song. Smith struggled with substance abuse, including heavy drinking and drug use, and was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and depression. His mental health issues and substance use influenced his life and work, often reflecting in his lyrics. Smith died on October 21, 2003.
