Kraftwerk is a German electronic band formed in Düsseldorf in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. The group was initially part of West Germany's experimental krautrock scene before adopting electronic instrumentation such as synthesizers, drum machines, and vocoders. Wolfgang Flür joined the band in 1973, followed by Karl Bartos in 1975. Kraftwerk released several influential albums, including Autobahn (1974), Trans-Europe Express (1977), The Man-Machine (1978), and Computer World (1981), which developed a style described as "robot pop" that combined electronic music with pop melodies, sparse arrangements, and repetitive rhythms. The band also adopted a stylised image featuring matching suits. After the release of Electric Café (1986), Flür left in 1987 and Bartos in 1990. Florian Schneider departed in 2008 to pursue solo work and passed away in 2020. Kraftwerk has continued to perform live under Ralf Hütter's leadership. The band has influenced various artists and genres, including synth-pop, hip hop, post-punk, techno, house music, ambient, and club music.
