What kind of imagery does the term 'gooner pop' conjure up? The name, coined by Australian duo 2charm, feels at its worst, so deliberately provocative it'll inspire pearl-clutching in the most chronically online; at its best, it's genius Google fuel that'll spark curiosity in those who see it's not that earnest.
But whatever image you've got in mind, it's probably not two guys in little more than football shorts, Ugg boots and trapper hats, the confused-climate uniform of 2charm; sonically, you're probably not guessing closest-breaking desirous club pop either.
"Legend has it that we met on a Discord server for big screen gooners just over a year ago," say 2charm, who choose mysterious nonsense over revealing anything about their past, and also elect to be referred to as 'two' and 'charm' or one conscious-sharing unit throughout the interview. "But the way that 2charm as a music project came to be was really just making music with friends for fun, and then playing those songs at parties with our friends, having a really strong response, and then being like, okay, maybe this is something that should exist outside of our little world."
Those friends involved are an all-star cast of Australia's underground dance scene. Their debut album' star scum city', released this February, was made in collaboration with EDM revivalist Ninajirachi, plus DJ-producers 1tbsp and Simon Lam.
The album arrived less than six months after 2charm's debut single. 'boyfriend', the pitched-up Europop club track about fancying someone from afar and being too scared to make a move, came with amateur choreography and a massive wait while they teased it (there's a fitting joke in there, but we won't make it).
"We accidentally ended up teasing the first single for way longer than we initially intended," says two, who leads most of the conversation. "We had a release plan, and then ended up signing a distribution deal after we had started teasing the song. I think we did the 'boyfriend' dance on TikTok every day for like six weeks-"
"Ten weeks," charm corrects.
"So we weren't going to stop posting after we had already started," two continues, "as it was ramping up to the actual release date, and by the time it came out, there was actually a bit of demand for it. I don't think that we would have done that for ten weeks before it came out on purpose, but it kind of unfolded nicely for us."
