What Truthpaste mean by their ‘computer drum’
Truthpaste’s computer drum is their electronic percussion setup, made by Theo Murchie, with James Ballarò also contributing alongside the band’s rotating instrumental roles.

Truthpaste’s “computer drum” is the five-piece’s electronic percussion setup, rather than a sixth member. Theo Murchie says he “make[s] the computer drums”, while James Ballarò also “dabble[s]” in them; around that shared element, the group use guitars, synths, saxophone, violin, lap steel, bass and several voices.
Who makes it?
In Dork’s 28th May 2026 feature on Truthpaste, Murchie introduced himself as playing “guitar, synth, sing and also make the computer drums”. Ballarò said his instruments were guitar, synth and lap steel, adding that he also dabbles in the computer drums. Murchie therefore has the clearest stated role in making the electronic percussion, with Ballarò contributing to it too.
The band have not identified a particular software package, drum machine or precise live-performance method. “Computer drum” is their own useful shorthand, rather than the name of a specific piece of kit.
