The Magic Gang prove to be one of the most popular new bands at Latitude, cementing their evolution from small act to major players. There are sing-alongs a plenty, and an audience in a dancing daze, itself a lucky break because frontman Jack Kaye appears on stage with his right leg in a brace. “We were playing this festival the other week, and I fell off the stage and fucked up my leg,” he explains. Encouraging the audience to dance enough for him too is a needless ask because, from the first opening chords, there’s no stopping anyone.
Leg injuries aside, Jack still brings a groove with his playing, while the rest of The Magic Gang help to bang out their infectious and downright incredible jams. Each track feels like a hit; there’s a power and might that reflects the dedicated crowd’s screams between songs.
Playing while the approaching sunset signals the end of this year’s Latitude, you can’t help but feel The Magic Gang will one day see their name at the top of the bill. They have the entire package – pop bangers, character, dedicated fans. Give it a few more years and their time will come.
