Placebo is a British alternative rock band formed in London in 1994 by vocalist-guitarist Brian Molko and bassist-guitarist Stefan Olsdal. The band has maintained these two members throughout its history, with three different full-time drummers. Initially, drummer Robert Schultzberg joined for a demo, a split single, and their debut album in 1996, after which Steve Hewitt replaced Schultzberg. Placebo gained wider recognition in 1997 with the release of the single 'Nancy Boy,' which was noted for its gender-bending content. The band distinguished itself from the Britpop scene through their androgynous appearance, musical content, and Molko's distinctive voice and lyrics that addressed themes such as sexuality, mental health, and drug use. Their 1998 album, Without You I’m Nothing, achieved international success, earning platinum status in the UK and gold in France. It produced several UK top-ten singles, including 'Pure Morning' and 'You Don't Care About Us,' as well as the top 15 hit 'Every You Every Me.' Steve Hewitt left the band in 2007 due to personal and musical differences.
