Au/Ra has released her new single ‘rewire’, the latest track from her debut album ‘heartcore’, which arrives on 26th June via Polydor Records.
Produced by Micah Jasper and written by Au/Ra alongside Jasper and Violet Skies, ‘rewire’ sits at the emotional centre of the 16-track record. The song explores self-blame, therapy and self-acceptance, with Au/Ra describing it as the “‘depression arc’” of the album.
“‘rewire’ is the emotional root of what I like to call the ‘depression arc’ of heartcore,” she explains. “As a result of going through rock bottom two years ago, I went to therapy quite a lot and revisited my childhood. It became clear to me that I’ve always felt out of place, dissociative and in my own world, and I had sown a seed of resentment towards myself for feeling that way.
“This song really helped me process that I do not need to feel guilty for feeling a little odd inside my body, I don’t need to rewire who I am, I need to rewire the perspective I had of myself. Not all our brains work in the same way and that can be a special and hard journey to go on in life to accept. I hope this one helps u on urs. <3”
‘heartcore’ is described as a concept album exploring betrayal, trauma and recovery through a blend of pop, electronica, hyperpop and alt-rock. Au/Ra says the project was created as a way of processing a difficult period in her life after her early breakthrough success.
Alongside the release of ‘rewire’, Au/Ra has announced two US headline shows for December.
