Tove Styrke has shared two new songs, ‘Song and Dance Man’ and ‘Let’s Go Camping’, the latest preview of her forthcoming album ‘The Afterparty’.
The tracks follow earlier singles ‘Prayer’ and ‘Space’ and offer another glimpse into the record, which Styrke describes as a concept album unfolding over the course of a single night.
“‘The Afterparty’ is a concept album where the story unfolds in chronological order during one night,” she explains. “On the surface, we follow a person through a series of events taking place at a party, but as the story progresses, we begin to realize there may be other dimensions to the plot.”
Positioned back-to-back on the album, the two new songs capture different moments in that story. “‘Song and Dance Man’ takes place early on in the record and in the story,” says Styrke. “Things are looking promising. Feeling confident and having fun. Nothing feels too serious at this point.”
She adds of its companion track: “On ‘Let’s Go Camping’, the mood becomes more intense and slightly manic. The line between what’s real and what isn’t is beginning to blur. We hear one side of a drunken conversation.”
Due this autumn, ‘The Afterparty’ was recorded using analogue synthesisers from the 1970s and 1980s alongside live drums and bass, with no samples used throughout the project. Styrke co-produced the album with longtime collaborator Magnus Larsson, alongside Joel Kiviaho and Linnéa Martinsson.
“It feels like we’re living in the afterparty phase of our time,” Styrke says of the record. “The album reflects on what that does to a person, told through the lens of an actual afterparty.”
The two new tracks arrive with videos directed by Natalie Olenheim Boija. “The videos are collages made to capture a sense of life, freedom and nostalgia,” says Styrke.
Following the album's release, Styrke will bring ‘The Afterparty’ to the stage with a run of special live performances, beginning with a show at Stockholm's Värmeverket on 20th November. More European dates are set to be announced soon.
Newman closes the album campaign with a blues-tinged track built on field recordings.
