A reworked Spanish-language version of
'What Is The Reason For It?' has arrived from
David Byrne, titled
'¿Cuál Es La Razón?'. The track, taken from his current album '
Who Is The Sky?', now features the vocals of Mexican singer
Natalia Lafourcade in place of Paramore's Hayley Williams, who sang on the original. Mexican Institute Of Sound handled production duties, reshaping the song into a brass-led, Latin-infused pop duet.
'Who Is The Sky?' came out through Matador Records and marks Byrne's first full-length since 2018's '
American Utopia'. Kid Harpoon produced the record, with arrangements across its 12 tracks provided by New York chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra. Contributors to the album also include St. Vincent and Tom Skinner of The Smile.
Discussing what drove the creative process, Byrne says: "At my age, at least for me, there's a 'don't give a shit about what people think' attitude that kicks in. I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I'm doing. That said, every new set of songs, every song even, is a new adventure. There's always a bit of, 'how do I work this?' I've found that not every collaboration works, but often when they do, it's because I'm able to clearly impart what it is I'm trying to do. They hopefully get that, and as a result, we're now joined together heading to the same unknown place."
To coincide with the single, Byrne has confirmed three Mexican shows this summer at Teatro Metropólitan in Mexico City, Telmex Auditorium in Guadalajara, and Escenario GNP in Monterrey.
