FKA twigs is in talks to portray Josephine Baker in an upcoming biopic from director Maïmouna Doucouré.
The untitled project has received endorsement from Baker's sons, Jean-Claude Bouillon Baker and Brian Bouillon Baker. Baker was a pioneering entertainer who became the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture with 'Siren of the Tropics' in 1927. Beyond her entertainment career, she worked with France's military intelligence during World War II and became a prominent civil rights activist in the 1950s.
The role would follow twigs' connection to Baker's legacy, having drawn inspiration from the entertainer for her appearance at the Met Gala 2025. "There's space for glory and outrage, and that, I think, is what being a dandy is all about: Having the confidence to stand there and trigger and enlighten and confuse and amaze through style," twigs told Vogue. "There is no diamond that could have outshone the one inside Josephine's chest."
twigs appeared in the 2024 remake of 'The Crow' alongside Bill Skarsgård and will feature in 'The Carpenter's Son' with Nicolas Cage. Their most recent album, '
Eusexua', arrived in January 2025. The biopic will be directed by Doucouré, whose previous work includes the 2020 feature 'Cuties'.
