Girl In The Year Above have arrived with their Really Very Good debut single 'Mama, My Heart Is Achin''

A new band that Dork HQ has been very, very (very) excited about for a while now - Girl In The Year Above have unveiled their first official release, 'Mama, My Heart Is Achin''.

Arriving with a sense of quiet inevitability after months of early live buzz and online teasers, the track introduces a project rooted in grief, memory and something more mythic. In the band’s own words, the song is “a whole landscape of grief and strength and magic,” positioning it less as a standalone release and more as an emotional world in miniature.

‘Mama, My Heart is Achin'’ is a slow-burning, deeply emotive debut that draws on folk-adjacent storytelling, spectral indie textures and a diaristic lyrical core. Early snippets and live performances suggest a track that balances fragility with scale - intimate in voice, expansive in feeling. The single was first teased earlier this month as an “end of tour surprise,” before landing today (20 March) as the band’s official debut release.

Notably, Girl In The Year Above have already secured a placement on the official soundtrack for the Peaky Blinders film, The Immortal Man, contributing an equally excellent reinterpretation of Massive Attack's 'Teardrop'. That soundtrack features a roster that also includes Fontaines D.C., Lankum, and Amy Taylor of Amyl and the Sniffers.
