Grace Cummings has announced her new album ‘Bloodhorse!’, due for release on 14th August via ATO Records, alongside its first single, ‘My God’.
The Australian songwriter’s fourth full-length album was recorded in Topanga Canyon, California with producer Jonathan Wilson, who previously worked with Cummings on 2024’s ‘Ramona’.
‘My God’ arrives with a self-directed-feeling visual from director Ben Portnoy. The track was recorded while Cummings was suffering from pneumonia.
“Lyrically, this song is about hatred, jealousy, rage,” Cummings says. “The God here is the dark forces that are wrapping around us, that we scroll through, the toxic energy that binds us together in this modern world, and the fear we feed it every day.”
Speaking about the album title, Cummings explains: “A bloodhorse is a horse expected to be a winner. But they can often also be temperamental, fearful, fragile and easily broken.”
“Sometimes I feel like I’m a trapped animal. And… when I go to sleep, sometimes it’s like I’m in the gate, twitching. And as soon as I open my eyes, I’m fucking running.”
‘Bloodhorse!’ follows the breakthrough success of ‘Ramona’, which introduced Cummings to a wider international audience. Across 12 tracks, the new record moves through themes of self-examination, mortality, fear and transformation, pairing Cummings’ expressive songwriting with shuddering synths, strings and darker textures.
Jonathan Wilson says: “With Grace Cummings, you actually have a once in a generation voice. Everyone who hears her sing would agree with that.”
The collaboration features on forthcoming album 'Picking Petals' ahead of a Barrowland headline date.
