About This Track
AJR's 'Beats' is a direct pitch to the headphone company Beats by Dre, framed as a song about the precarity of success and the temptation of sponsorship. Jack Met narrates the vertigo of minor fame: songs playing in supermarkets, the fear of irrelevance, the pressure to diversify before the moment passes. The chorus loops a simple question: would the brand pay to be endorsed, and would that money subsidise the very track being made? The song works as both satire and confession. Met acknowledges the contradiction at its heart, wondering aloud whether he has already become the kind of artist he used to mock for taking corporate money. There is no resolution, only the recurring refrain and the bridge's terse warning: don't be a fool. The track captures the bind of independent artists in the streaming era, where visibility is fragile and the line between artistic integrity and survival feels thinner each day.
