About This Track

'Rules' by Alex G is an alternative track from the album 'Rules'. Released in 2012, it is built around a blunt, corrective talk-through of right and wrong, with repeated admonitions framed as rules that are supposed to keep someone safe and content. The lyric moves through accusations, instructions, and warnings from a sequence of voices, culminating in a direct, summing statement, “Rules are”. Beneath the nursery-like insistence on manners and obedience, the song carries a tense undercurrent of abandonment and instruction, as someone leaves and others try to make sense of it.

"Rules" is a track by Alex G, from the album Rules, released 15th January 2012. The track is 3:15 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 10 articles about Alex G.

Lyrics

Rules

This is wrong
This is right
Why don't you understand
You fight
Clean that mess
Wear that dress
I want you to be happy
I guess
When I go you'll know
By my footprints in the snow
Mama says where'd you go
Daddy says where'd you go
Baby says don't you go
She says
Rules are rules
Made for fools
And you are no exception
We're tools
I won't believe
Hate my need
To be a little part of
A machine
Don't you dare ask why
Ill be with you all the time
Mama says close your eyes
Daddy says close your eyes
But baby don't close her eyes
