'Pleader' closes 'Relaxer' as a choir-led folk anthem rooted in the landscape of a Welsh mining community. Built on Richard Llewelyn's 1939 novel, the song unfolds through repeated refrains of "How green, how green was my valley?" layering voices in harmonies that swell with pride and longing. It stretches beyond conventional single length, but the sense of hope and collective voice it builds justifies that ambition. A Dork four-star record. Alt-J's refusal to compress their vision into radio-friendly shapes defines the track; where most bands would trim and polish, they let the song breathe and grow, trusting the emotional weight of those accumulating voices to carry the listener through. The result feels like a legitimate moment of something larger than themselves, breaking every rule of the three-minute banger whilst somehow belonging entirely on the wider stage.
"Pleader" is a single by alt-J, from the album Relaxer, released 1st June 2017. The track is 5:49 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 10 articles about alt-J.

Quiet halls, GarageBand and a stripped-back set of instruments gave alt-J’s formative music some very practical boundaries.

‘Get Better’ began with an improvised line to Joe Newman’s partner in 2018, but its bereavement story was written later during lockdown.

alt-J’s 2022 crypto-goldrush song gives its schoolboy millionaire a thrilling fantasy, then leaves him amid the awkward social consequences of having too much money too soon.
