About This Track
Released in 2009, 'Crying Lightning' finds Alex Turner sketching a portrait of a relationship built on provocation and unease. The narrator circles a figure whose pastimes consist of the strange, twisted and deranged, drawn to and repelled by a game of emotional aggravation. Turner writes the encounter in vivid, unsettling detail: a café by a cracker factory, a magic trick, a gobstopper offered as attention runs out.
The song's central image, a little game called 'Crying Lightning', remains elusive, but the shift from love to hate in the repeated chorus marks the souring of fascination into resentment. The narrator tries not to suffer the indignity of a reaction, yet there are no cracks to grasp or gaps to claw. By the final verse, the refrain turns accusatory, the title phrase chanted like an indictment. It is a study in the pull of difficult people, rendered with the band's characteristic eye for the absurd and the uncomfortable.

Why? Well, mostly 'internet stuff'.
