About This Track

"I see myself stretched out; open to beauty however brief or violent." Arlo Parks begins her debut album with this statement of purpose, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. 'Eugene' is a study in the collision between long friendship and sudden desire, told with the kind of precise, wistful detail that makes the personal feel universal. Parks' breathy vocals soften the sting of unrequited feeling, transforming what could be bitter into something almost tender. The song moves between dream sequences and sharp moments of jealousy, each image earned and specific: a cigarette between purple lips, hands in a shirt, records shared as intimacy. What makes the song work is Parks' refusal to simplify the emotional tangle at its centre. She holds two truths at once: the bond forged since adolescence and the half-love that has crept in unbidden. The melody sits in a hazy, lo-fi space that lets the lyrics breathe, never pushing too hard. By the final chorus, when she admits "I kind of fell half in love and you're to blame", the confession feels inevitable and devastating in equal measure. A Dork five-star record.
