'Everything' builds from quiet domestic observation to something approaching philosophical resignation. Howard sings of a white house on a hill, a church spire, the small anchors of a place, but the song's real subject is impermanence. The chorus arrives with the weight of inevitability: every kingdom must one day come to an end. It is a song about staying whilst knowing that nothing stays, about treasuring scenes that will outlast the person who treasures them. The melody moves with the patience of someone who has made peace with loss. There is no drama in the acceptance, only a kind of steady clarity. She will be here when it's all done, Howard sings, and the pronoun shifts between lover and landscape until they become almost the same thing. What remains is the turning of seasons, the sun long gone, the body eventually beneath the ground. Everything will start again anew, the chorus insists, but that renewal belongs to the world, not to us.
