About This Track
Released in February 2016 as the lead single from 'Lemonade', 'Formation' arrived as a statement of intent. Beyoncé wrote and produced the track with Mike Will Made It, with Swae Lee and Pluss as co-writers; Pluss formulated the original beat whilst Lee freestyled the hook. The song became a bold declaration of Black pride, Southern heritage, and female empowerment, its lyrics tracing lineage through Alabama and Louisiana, celebrating natural hair and features, and asserting self-possession with unapologetic clarity.
The production sits low and sparse, letting Beyoncé's voice command the space. She moves between conversational asides and chanted refrains, the repetition of the central hook building momentum rather than monotony. References to hot sauce, Red Lobster, and coordinated movement anchor the track in vernacular detail, whilst the call to formation itself functions as both rallying cry and challenge. The song earned a Grammy nomination for Video of the Year, its visual component amplifying the track's cultural and political resonance.
"Formation" is a single by Beyoncé, from the album Lemonade, released 22nd April 2016. The track is 3:26 long. It's filed under Pop. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 17 articles about Beyoncé.
