About This Track

Released in July 2013 as the lead single from her second studio album 'Fire Within', 'Wings' became Birdy's highest-charting solo single in the UK, peaking at number eight. The song found particular commercial success across Europe, accumulating hundreds of millions of streams in the years since.

The lyric builds its longing from accumulated detail: sunlight on skin, dancing on car roofs, photographs of a stage. Each memory circles back to the same absent figure, the repetition of "it made me think of you" and "just for the thought of you" sketching a portrait of distance rather than presence. The chorus lifts on a conditional, the wings that might close the gap between foreign states and familiar faces remaining hypothetical.

Birdy's vocal stays measured against the song's gradual swell, the arrangement allowing space for the lyric's wistful precision to register clearly.
