Released in February 1996 as the fourth single from her second solo album 'Post', 'Hyper-ballad' finds Björk and co-producer Nellee Hooper building a track around the ritual of maintaining emotional balance inside a long-term relationship. The lyric describes a morning routine at the edge of a clifftop, the narrator throwing car parts and bottles off before her partner wakes, listening to the sounds they make on the way down, imagining what her own body would sound like slamming against the rocks below. The song addresses the discomfort of feeling overly safe, the need to re-awaken life's pleasant danger when the initial high of a relationship has settled. Björk frames the compulsive act as a way to feel happier, to be safe up here with you, the ritual a kind of emotional recalibration performed in private. The production layers her voice over string arrangements by Eumir Deodato and programming by Marius De Vries, the track moving between intimacy and scale.
"Hyper-ballad" is a track by Björk, released 7th June 1995. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 5 articles about Björk.
