About This Track

A ballad about the insufficiency of near-misses, 'Almost Doesn't Count' finds Brandy at the centre of a relationship that never quite commits. The song moves through a series of almosts: almost love, almost happiness, almost freedom. Each one lands short of the mark. The architecture is simple and effective. Brandy's voice carries the weight of resignation, a person watching someone else hesitate at the threshold and deciding that hesitation is itself a kind of answer. The emotional logic is unsparing. She won't keep trying for someone with one foot out the door, won't settle for a heart that's never quite sure. The chorus states this plainly: she needs certainty or nothing. By the final verse, the tone has shifted from pleading to prophecy. Maybe he'll regret it. Maybe he'll come back. But she won't be waiting. Almost, she sings, doesn't count.
