'Hate' by Cat Power is a 2006 track in which the lyrics weigh up escape routes and the idea of no way to hide, before turning to who “made it out alive”. The narrator sounds sceptical about anyone’s reassurances, as if the world insists on laws and rules even as it promises freedom. There is a sense of pressure and fallout in the lines about those who did not manage it, followed by an almost weary observation of how everyone turns up and carries on anyway. The hook idea of 'Hate' sits over a fatalistic view of survival and judgement.
