'Devil Town' appeared as the eighth and final track on Cavetown's eponymous debut album in 2015. The song emerged from the artist's attempt to explore a new genre, and draws directly on the experience of parental divorce. Over the years it has accumulated hundreds of millions of streams, becoming one of the project's most enduring releases. The lyrics sketch a portrait of childhood anxiety refracted through domestic fracture. Cavetown writes plainly about parents who 'aren't in love', the compensatory promise of two birthdays, and a persistent unease that colours even ordinary moments. The refrain anchors itself in companionship rather than resolution: the reassurance of falling together, of making it through another night with someone else's hand held tight. The title's 'Devil Town' functions less as a place than as a state of mind, colder in the summertime, where forgetting your own name feels worth remembering. It's a song about fear managed rather than overcome, about finding safety in shared vulnerability. The domestic details accumulate quietly until the whole thing feels like a photograph you didn't know someone had taken.
