Cavetown - Running With Scissors
On 'Running With Scissors', Cavetown sounds more curious and playful than ever.
About This Track
'Juliet' appeared on Cavetown's 2019 compilation mixtape 'Animal Kingdom', co-written with Simi. The track draws its title from the object of longing at its centre, a figure the narrator cannot reach whilst paralysed by depression's physical weight. The song maps the gap between wanting to cry, to run, to be seen as pretty, and the inability to move or feel. Cavetown frames the struggle as a child's confusion, repeating the image of someone with corks in his eyes and a bully in his head, trying to discern when to power through and when to ask for help. The sour boy he wants to shoot in the brain is presumably himself; he'd miss him in the morning. The refrain about standing ground versus sitting down captures the song's central tension: the desire to make a colour no one else has seen before, set against the reality of being stuck in bed, unreachable even to Juliet.
