Dog Years

Back into town for a minute to pick up prescriptions

The doctor refilled yesterday

To call it affliction's a careless description

Of the terrible itch in my brain

The pharmacy opens at six in the morning

I don't start my day until two

I'll be there after sunset when everyone's just left

And hope I don't run into you

And since the minute I got here, been aging in dog years

And watching time speed to a halt

God, you look like a stranger

I knew you in summer

Guess that's just the winter's fault

Haven't seen you around since your father skipped town

Had to hear it from one of your friends

Think the last time I saw him, he kissed both our foreheads

And I fell asleep in your bed

Five years I tried to be soundless to keep you around

But I always had too much to say

Now I feel like a failure for standing in line here

And daring to take up your space
