'August' traces the arc of a relationship that burned bright and then cooled into estrangement. The song dwells on sensory memory: sticky fingers, the sound of breathing, the taste of another person. These details anchor what might otherwise be a familiar lament about distance, making the loss feel specific and physical rather than abstract. The lyrics circle around a central paradox. The narrator has loved this person from the start, yet they've become strangers. Time has fractured them; the singer remains stuck in July whilst their former lover has moved on, embodied in the song's title as a month that belonged to both of them once. The refrain "we don't talk about it" suggests a deliberate silence, a choice to let the past stay buried rather than excavate it. What emerges is a portrait of two people who were close enough to know each other completely, then distant enough to forget that closeness ever existed.
