Arrows

'Arrows' finds the Foo Fighters in reflective mode, built around a central image of internal conflict rendered as weaponry. The song traces a life of quiet struggle, someone dancing through existence on the front lines whilst waiting to rise, caught between aspiration and stasis. Dave Grohl and producer Greg Kurstin construct the track with measured intensity, the repeated refrain of arrows in the eyes, fear where the heart should be, and war in the mind functioning as a kind of emotional inventory. It is a song about the violence we do to ourselves. The lyrics shift between third person and direct address, collapsing the distance between observer and subject. A woman becomes a cipher for anyone caught in that particular bind between desire and paralysis, the imagery moving from the concrete (a dead end street, screaming biology) to the abstract (Queen Gemini, the world in her sights). By the final repetitions, the song has moved from documenting her condition to acknowledging a shared one. The effect is less sermon than recognition.
