Ghostemane confronts depression and suicidal ideation head-on in 'D(r)ead', a track built around the repeated image of a noose as both literal threat and metaphorical weight. The song adopts the voice of someone in deep psychological crisis, moving between confession and defiance. Lyrically, he traces the path from numbness ("I'm too dead inside") to the moment of reckoning, searching for reasons to live whilst acknowledging the pull towards oblivion. The production draws from industrial and metal textures, creating an abrasive backdrop that matches the rawness of the lyrical content. There's a Nine Inch Nails quality to the approach: unpolished, deliberately harsh, refusing the comfort of conventional song structure. The bridge strips back to near-silence before building again, a moment of vulnerability that undercuts the aggression elsewhere. It's a song that treats its subject with the seriousness it demands, neither exploiting the darkness nor softening it for consumption.
"D(r)ead" is a single by Ghostemane, released 23rd July 2018. Full lyrics are available below.
