About This Track

'Again' by grandson is a 2020 song whose lyrics are restless and self-lacerating, with the narrator feeling overwhelmed by a past that is catching up, and talking in harsh images of being poisoned and dying while insisting “Never better, never better”. The verses set a sense of racing panic and grim dishonesty against a relationship that is framed as togetherness with the speaker cast as the exception. The effect is fatalistic and defensive, as if the singer is trying to outrun their own recollection while it keeps breaking through.

"Again" is a track by grandson, released 22nd May 2020. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 3 articles about grandson.

Lyrics

Again

[Verse 1: grandson]

My heart is racin', I'm chasing a feeling, this ceilin'

My past is catchin' up to me, right through me

Poison coursin', I'm dyin', I'm lyin'

Never better, never better

I wish I was present, but it's so unpleasant

We're in this together, but I'm the exception

My best friend's a stranger, this isn't my nature

But I'm never better

[Chorus: grandson]

I was thinkin'

I don't wanna be alone when I'm sinkin'

But it's all I've ever known, I was dreamin'

That today would be the day I would change

But I woke up the same again

I was thinkin'

I don't wanna be alone when I'm sinkin'

But it's all I've ever known, I was dreamin'

That today would be the day

I would change but I woke up the same again

And again

(Oh, oh, oh, oh)

[Verse 2: Zero 9:36]

Is it fucked up if I pulled you in the way of my bad luck

And I asked for you to stay? I don't have much

What's the point in holdin' on? Both my hands are goin' numb

But something's tellin' me I should have never let go

So why-y-y-y don't I-I-I-I-

I ever wanna wake up?

Little by little, I'm sure that it would break us

And even if I'm not in the way of your trust

Then nevermind, adrenaline will never escape us

[Chorus: grandson]

I was thinkin'

I don't wanna be alone when I'm sinkin'

But it's all I've ever known, I was dreamin'

That today would be the day I would change

But I woke up the same again

I was thinkin'

I don't wanna be alone when I'm sinkin'

But it's all I've ever known, I was dreamin'

That today would be the day

I would change but I woke up the same again

[Bridge: grandson]

And again, and again, and again

It's all the same again

And again, and again

It's all the same again

And again, and again

It's all the same again

And again, and again

It's all the same again

[Chorus: grandson]

I was thinkin'

I don't wanna be alone when I'm sinkin'

But it's all I've ever known, I was dreamin'

That today would be the day I would change

But I woke up the same again

I was thinkin' (I was thinkin')

I don't wanna be alone when I'm sinkin' (When I'm sinkin')

But it's all I've ever known, I was dreamin'

That today would be the day I would change

But I woke up the same again

And again

[Outro: grandson]

(Oh, oh, oh, oh)

(Oh, oh, oh, oh)

It's all the same again

(Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)

(Oh, oh)
