Tom Morello has announced the inaugural Power To The People Festival, with Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Joan Baez and Serj Tankian among the artists set to perform.
The one-day event takes place on 3rd October at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, and was revealed from the stage during Morello’s current US tour run with Springsteen.
Described as a “non-partisan celebration of peace, justice, solidarity, music, and community action”, the line-up also includes Dave Matthews, Brittany Howard, Dropkick Murphys, Jack Black, Cypress Hill, Killer Mike, grandson, Taylor Momsen, The Linda Lindas and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron is also set to appear, while Shepard Fairey will provide artwork for the event and perform a DJ set.
Alongside the performances, attendees will be able to visit a Freedom Village featuring nonprofit organisations, advocacy groups and community partners. Beneficiaries include voting rights organisation VoteRiders and voter registration group HeadCount, with a portion of ticket sales and all net proceeds from VIP tickets going towards those initiatives.
Speaking about the event, Morello said: “The Power To The People festival is about freedom, justice, equality and rock and roll. It's about the power everyday human beings have when they come together through music, art, community, and action.”
Further acts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets go on sale Saturday 30th May at 10am ET.
The team behind Montréal’s cult alternative festival reflect on a decade of left-field bookings, bilingual confusion and building an “ever-growing underground gathering”.
