Pulling Teeth

'Pulling Teeth' presents domestic abuse from the perspective of someone trapped in a cycle of violence and emotional dependency. The narrator is physically injured, isolated, and unable to leave, yet frames his situation through a warped lens of devotion. He tells himself his love is true even as he acknowledges his partner's capacity for harm, a contradiction that cuts to the heart of how abuse operates: the victim becomes complicit in his own entrapment. The song balances its dark subject with a kind of grim humour. The repetition of "Oh God, she's killing me" works as both literal complaint and resigned acceptance, whilst the locked window imagery emphasises isolation and helplessness. Green Day treats the material without sensationalism, letting the contradiction between the narrator's professed love and his obvious suffering speak for itself. The result is uncomfortable and deliberately so.
