About This Track

The debut single from 'Dookie', released in January 1994, takes its title from a Washington town where the band first played it. Mike Dirnt's bassline anchors a track that channels the energy of The Damned's 'New Rose', Tré Cool's drum lead and Billie Joe Armstrong's fretwork locked into a restless gallop. Armstrong adopts the voice of someone trapped indoors, the boredom so total that even familiar escape routes have lost their appeal. The chorus reaches for paradise but settles for suffocation, the repetition mirroring the stasis it describes. The subject matter is blunt and the delivery matches it, three minutes of claustrophobia rendered as punk propulsion.
