About This Track
Released on October 21, 2020, through RCA Records as the second single from her debut studio album 'Back of My Mind', 'Damage' finds H.E.R. negotiating the fragile early stages of romantic trust. Written alongside Ant Clemons, Tiara Thomas, and producers Cardiak and Jeffy 'Gitty' Gitelman, with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the track balances vulnerability with self-preservation, H.E.R. cataloguing her imperfections whilst warning a prospective partner about the consequences of carelessness. The chorus pivots between two possible futures: one of devotion and presence, the other of deception and wasted time. H.E.R. frames emotional investment as a kind of exposure, the song's central plea a simple one: be careful what you take for granted. The production, handled by a team including members of Kanye West's Sunday Service gospel-rap group, keeps the arrangement restrained, allowing the lyric's directness to carry the weight.
