'Cherry' closes with a voicemail fragment in French, the voice of Camille Rowe, Styles' ex-girlfriend. The song was written following their break-up in July 2018, during a period Styles later described as 'not great'. The inclusion of her recorded voice, casual, apologetic, mentioning a trip to the beach, turns the track into a kind of archive, the keepsake you know you should delete but keep anyway.
The verses circle a familiar jealousy: the pet name transferred to someone new, the friends still in touch, the parents' gallery. Styles writes 'I noticed that there's a piece of you in how I dress / Take it as a compliment', a line that admits influence without quite calling it loss. The repetition of 'Don't you call him "baby"' functions less as accusation than as a loop the narrator cannot exit, the same thought returning each time he tries to move past it.
It is one of the more vulnerable moments on 'Fine Line', built around what remains rather than what was.
"Cherry" is a track by Harry Styles, released 13th December 2019. The track is 4:19 long. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 20 articles about Harry Styles.
