Coronach

All hail our star and saviour

In times of woe and favour

Ascend in joy and sorrow

Eternally we follow

“He is gone on the mountain

He is lost to the forest

Like a summer-dried fountain

When our need was the sorest

The font reappearing

From the raindrops shall borrow

But to us comes no cheering

To Duncan no morrow!”

Beckon the haar - it approaches

Barefoot in the grey morning dew

‘Neath the slow fading sun, the circle all gather

To honour the false life of you

Be it a war cry, be it a prayer

The last words you spoke, they still haunt the air

The grievers look skyward, yet you bide below

Restless in fire, and let it be so

The roads of the coffin

Are all paved with sin, boy

Don’t run from your calling

Don’t fear the darkness within

Sounding the death knell

This is your funeral

Let the pipes ring out

Let them squeal

‘Fore the coronach

Rattle the death bell

We bid you farewell

Let the quines cry out

Let them wail

For the coronach

“The hand of the reaper

Takes the ears that are hoary

But the voice of the weeper

Wails manhood in glory

The autumn winds rushing

Waft the leaves that are serest

But our flower was in flushing

When blighting was nearest.”

Sounding the death knell

This is your funeral

Let the pipes ring out

Let them squeal

‘Fore the coronach

Rattle the death bell

We bid you farewell

Let the quines cry out

Let them wail

For the coronach

So dreich is the day, bleak is the night

Winter is coming, with no end in sight

Storms closing in, skies dressed to mourn

Doom’s breath is creeping, But life still goes on

Grief-masked hero worship

Your facade clean, though sure it did slip

That silver tongue, it kept your secrets

From a scream to a sigh, and now speechless

Forget the Lamentations

I hope your torment never ends

“Fleet foot on the correi

Sage counsel in cumber

Red hand in the foray

How sound is thy slumber!

Like the dew on the mountain

Like the foam on the river

Like the bubble on the fountain

Thou art gone, and for ever!”
